This tool cuts away unwanted areas from an image, keeping only the portion you select. Beyond just fitting a target ratio, how you crop affects how the image feels compositionally. A common guideline is the "rule of thirds" โ dividing the frame into a 3ร3 grid and positioning the main subject along one of the grid lines or at an intersection, rather than dead centre, often produces a more visually interesting composition. When cropping a photo where the subject is currently centred, deliberately shifting the crop so the subject sits slightly off-centre (with more space on one side) can make the result feel less static. For portraits specifically, leaving a little space above the head (rather than cropping right at the hairline) generally looks more natural than a very tight crop, while cropping too far below the subject can leave awkward empty space at the bottom of the frame.
One of the most common practical reasons to crop is removing something unwanted that's visible at the edge of a photo โ a stray object, part of another person, a distracting background element, or in the case of scanned documents, the edges of a scanner bed or surrounding desk visible around a page. When the unwanted element is only at one edge, cropping just that edge (rather than uniformly cropping all sides, which would also remove wanted content from the opposite edge) preserves as much of the useful image as possible. Free-form cropping (without a fixed aspect ratio constraint) gives the most flexibility for this kind of targeted removal, since the crop doesn't need to maintain any particular proportions.
Cropping keeps the original resolution (pixel density) of the remaining area โ it doesn't scale or compress anything. The cropped image will simply have fewer total pixels because part of the image has been removed.
