That said, plenty of effective memes use other text styles too — the right choice depends on the image and the tone you're going for.
The text is doing most of the work in a meme, and a few patterns tend to make captions more effective. Brevity helps — long sentences crammed into the top or bottom of an image are harder to read quickly, and memes are usually consumed in a fraction of a second while scrolling. Captions that set up an expectation in the top text and subvert or pay it off in the bottom text follow one of the most common and reliable meme structures, since the contrast between the two lines creates the humour. And captions that work with the image's existing expression or composition — rather than against it — tend to land better; an image of someone looking surprised pairs naturally with text describing something surprising, while pairing it with unrelated text can feel disjointed even if the words themselves are funny in isolation.
If you're using your own photo rather than a template, images with a clear focal point and some empty space near the top and/or bottom — sky, a plain wall, open ground — give text somewhere to sit without overlapping busy detail or important parts of the image. If your photo doesn't have this empty space naturally, you can still add text over busier areas, but it's worth choosing a text colour and outline that contrasts well with that specific part of the image, or considering a semi-transparent background behind the text if the tool supports it, so the caption remains legible.
